Oregon Hope Chinese School, located in Portland, was founded in 2005 by a group of dedicated educators and parents passionate about multilingual education, particularly in Mandarin Chinese. The school offers a comprehensive range of programs including a Montessori-inspired bilingual preschool and kindergarten, a Saturday Chinese school, summer camps, and after-school Chinese classes.

At OHCS, students immerse themselves in Chinese language and culture through a diverse array of classes, which include Mandarin Chinese, Wushu (martial arts), calligraphy, Chinese painting, Go (Weiqi), traditional dance, and GuZheng (a Chinese instrument), among others. Our goal is to create a rich and engaging learning environment that fosters language skills, cultural appreciation, and personal growth.

All classes at OHCS are taught by experienced and dedicated native Mandarin-speaking educators, ensuring each student receives individualized attention due to our small student-to-teacher ratios. As part of the Oregon cultural network, OHCS is supported by the Oregon Cultural Trust.

In addition to language instruction, our comprehensive curriculum encompasses listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, encouraging inquiry, collaboration, and discovery. At our school, we don’t just teach the language; we celebrate the culture through activities that enrich the educational experience.

Join us at OHCS and discover how learning Chinese can open doors to new cultural and linguistic opportunities for your children!

Fantastic experience: Our daughter attended preschool at Oregon Hope Chinese School from age 2.5-5.5. I cannot overstate what a great fit it was for our family, and what an honor it was to see our daughter blossom within the support and love of her teachers and classmates here. Some things we loved: * Multi-age classroom allows for less 1-to-1 comparison and conflict, and more collaboration between the “big kids” and the younger class coming in. Inspired by the older students, our daughter was organically motivated to participate in all aspects of learning. In the later years, she took her role as a mentor seriously and grew tremendously as a “big sister” who is inclusive and supportive of her younger friends. * Outdoor time and nature education is prioritized. Every year there was a special project to learn about animal and insect life cycles: the kids got care for chickens they hatched from eggs, release monarchs they watched grow from caterpillars, and watch as 100 tadpoles grew legs and hopped away into the creek nearby. * Singing and dance is incorporated into the daily routine. Beyond musical skills, this helps give children a sense of purpose and belonging in a collaborative way. * The children are invited to participate in and perform at cultural events throughout the year. These are cherished memories for the whole family, and build confidence in the kids. * True to Montessori style, children are encouraged to participate at their own level, foster their natural curiosity, and take responsibility for their own possessions and behavior. The teachers here believe in their abilities to be engaged members of their community, and they rise to the occasion.

Joanna: thank you so much for sharing these kind words. It has been such a joy watching your daughter grow from her very first days in our classroom into a confident, kind, and caring “big sister” to her friends. Seeing her curiosity, creativity, and compassion blossom has been an honor for all of us.

We love that you noticed and appreciated the things we value most—multi-age learning, time in nature, music and dance, cultural celebrations, and fostering independence. Your daughter embraced all of these so beautifully, and her spirit and leadership have left a lasting impression on our community.

We are so grateful to your family for being such an important part of our school. Thank you for allowing us to be part of her early journey.

Fantastic experience: As native Chinese speakers, my wife and I take Chinese language learning seriously. We chose Oregon Hope because it is the only school in the area that offers the Ma Li Ping (MLP) curriculum. This structured, step-by-step program helps students progress toward native-level proficiency, preparing them for the Chinese AP exam in high school and enabling them to earn college credits. My oldest daughter went to UPENN last fall. Her college accepted her Chinese AP credits. For non-heritage students, the school also offers Chinese immersion courses, providing an accessible and engaging way to explore the Chinese language and culture with confidence. This inclusive approach has received high praise from non-Mandarin-speaking families. Beyond language learning, Oregon Hope partners with US Wushu Center and other professionals in the Chinese community to offer Wushu, Chinese painting, calligraphy, traditional instruments, and dance classes. A highlight for our family is the annual Chinese New Year Festival Gala, where students of all ages get the chance to showcase their talents on stage. For anyone looking for a high-quality Chinese language and cultural education, we highly recommend Oregon Hope Chinese School!

LuYue: Thank you for sharing your family’s story. We’re so proud that the Ma Li Ping curriculum helped support your daughter all the way to UPENN, where her AP credits were recognized—what an amazing achievement!

We’re also deeply grateful for the many ways your family has given back. From creating and teaching Java classes to donating all tuition in support of the school, and through your daughter’s leadership as a teacher and volunteer, you have made a lasting impact on our community. Families like yours truly make Oregon Hope more than a school—it’s a family.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful little preschool with mandarin immersion. The teachers are kind and patient with the kids. There's a weekly newsletter with what the kids studied during the day and any relevant songs, videos or books that were used. It's great seeing our little one bring home a craft she proudly made every couple weeks and having her explain it. It's nice that the kids learn to tidy up after themselves after they are done playing. The teachers are very accommodating and friendly to us parents and take time to small talk or chat about school during drop off and pick up. We rotated through a few daycares and preschools before settling on this one for the long haul, highly recommend it.

Liam: Thank you for your kind words! We’re so happy your little one is thriving here—whether it’s proudly bringing home crafts, sharing songs, or learning to tidy up with friends. Our teachers love building strong connections with both children and parents, and it means so much that you feel at home with us. We’re grateful for your trust and recommendation!

Fantastic experience: We have been a part of the Oregon Hope Chinese School community for almost three years now and couldn’t be more grateful for the experience! As a non-Mandarin speaking family, we have been amazed at our 5 year old’s ability to learn and speak Mandarin thanks to the Oregon Hope program and encouragement. We value the school’s play-based approach to learning, outdoor classroom environment when weather is permitting, flexible aftercare, cultural community engagement, and family participation. In addition to a wonderful preschool experience, we have gained a wonderful community with the families attending the school. We now have two children enrolled in the program and it’s been a wonderful fit for our family. Both children look forward to attending school daily and speak very highly of their teachers and community. We’d highly recommend this school!!

Fantastic experience: We sent our daughter to Oregon Hope Chinese School based on a friend’s recommendation, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Our daughter was quite shy and spent most of her time at home due to COVID, and we were really worried about her social development. But thanks to the amazing and patient teachers at the school, she adapted so well. She absolutely loves going to school every day and has made some wonderful friends there. She has become more outgoing, active and happy. Even now that she is in kindergarten, we still enroll her in the after-school program because of how much she enjoys it. The school is a Chinese-English dual-language immersion program. We are especially amazed by how many Chinese characters our daughter has learned and she is also very proud of her progress. The school also organizes wonderful performances during major holidays, giving students the chance to shine on stage and build their confidence. Overall, Oregon Hope Chinese School provides a very nurturing and enriching environment for children to grow and thrive. We love it here.

Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience! The pandemic has certainly impacted our children in many ways, and we know how important it is to provide them with a nurturing and supportive environment. We feel truly honored to be part of your daughter’s journey and to witness her growth—both socially and academically. Knowing that she is happy, confident, and surrounded by great friends brings us so much joy.

Our teachers pour their hearts into creating a warm and engaging space where every child can thrive, and your kind words mean the world to us. We’re so grateful for your trust and thrilled to continue supporting your daughter’s learning. We can’t wait to see all the amazing things she will accomplish!

Thank you for being a cherished part of the Oregon Hope Chinese School.

Fantastic experience: We love our school and teachers here! This is an amazing school run by a talented and passionate principal and supported by parent volunteers and the local community. We've sent all our three children there to learn chinese language and culture since 2009. Our youngest daughter started attending the school at age of 4, and she is 16 now. Over the last 12years, she's learned how to speak, read, and write in Chinese Mandarin from a few words to pages of reading and writing assignments. It is amazing to watch her develop her language skills and learn Chinese culture. The school offers a variety of Chinese language classes and cultural activities. Every year, students get to participate in annual community celebrations and events such as Chinese New Year, Mid-moon Festival, as well Pioneer Square Chinese Festival. It is very fun and also helps students to develop a sense of community. I have saved a lot of pictures of my daughter performing in these events. It has been a great way for her to connect with her culture and heritage and be proud of herself. Over the time, we have bonded with teachers who have taught and worked with my daughter. They are passionate and professional! We love our school and highly recommend to parents who are looking for a Chinese language school.

Dear Cheau-Ling: Watching your daughter grow from a curious 4-year-old just beginning her Chinese journey to a confident 16-year-old who can read, write, and fully embrace her heritage has been an absolute joy and privilege.

It’s incredibly special that your family has been part of our school since 2009. We also want to take a moment to sincerely thank you for your dedication and contributions as a volunteer. Your support has made a meaningful impact on our school community, helping us create a nurturing and enriching environment for all our students. It’s the commitment of parents like you that makes our school such a warm and thriving place.

We have shared so many wonderful memories with you over the years. Seeing your daughter joy and passion shine through in every performance has been truly special. Knowing that our school has helped her build a deep connection to her roots fills our hearts with pride and gratitude.

Thank you for being such a valuable part of our school family. We are truly grateful for your ongoing support and look forward to creating many more wonderful memories together!

Negative experience: I would like to share my personal experience with Oregon Hope Chinese School. This review reflects only my perspective, and I am not the author of any other reviews about this school. In October 2024, my four-year-old son told me after pick-up that his teacher had “hit my butt” because he “wasn’t napping.” When I asked if it hurt, he said, “No, it didn’t,” and lightly demonstrated the action on himself. We do not use physical discipline at home, so this concerned me. Without discussing the incident further at that time, we decided to withdraw our child. Later, I had minimal communication with the school—mainly to collect my son’s photo, arrange for a refund of deposit, and express that I was glad he had learned some basic Chinese counting. I did not revisit my concerns, as I felt I already had enough reason to keep him withdrawn. In January 2025, I received written communication from the school referencing a different Google review—one I did not write—which they wanted removed. The mention of possible legal action in that message added to my unease. I am not making formal accusations; I’m sharing what my child told me and why I felt it best to withdraw him. Other families may have different experiences at this school. My hope is simply to offer one parent’s account, so others can make informed decisions and discuss discipline methods when choosing a preschool. — Additional Thoughts for Other Families — I am sharing this to help other parents make informed decisions. After posting my original review, the school responded in a way that raised further concerns for me. Specifically, they stated that my child needed special services, which is inaccurate—he was never determined to need such services, nor did he qualify for them. Additionally, their response references my wife in connection to this review, even though she did not author it. If she chooses to share her own perspective, that is her decision, but I believe responses should remain specific to the reviewer. Some of the wording in their reply also conveys a meaning that may not accurately reflect key facts. I encourage parents to carefully consider how a school communicates and handles feedback when making their decision.

Dear Matthew and Neelum Ferrin:
We want to address your recent reviews and clarify our position. Physical discipline is strictly against our values and practices.

As you know, in October 2024, you contacted the child abuse hotline, which led to an investigation by DHS and ELD. We fully cooperated with the process, including interviews with students, staff, and parents over the course of several months.

While your complaint was unexpected, we were committed to ensuring the matter was handled properly. After a thorough investigation, the authorities concluded that the allegations of child abuse were invalid, and no physical discipline has been used at our school. We have shared the outcome with you and our school families, as it reinforces our commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for all.

We understand that transitioning from home to school can be a challenging step for some new students. In September 2024, we recommended Northwest Regional Education Services (NWRES) to you, as they offer early intervention and special education programs for preschoolers facing difficulties at school. NWRES has been a valuable support in fostering positive educational experiences for all students.

We hope this clears up any confusion. Rest assured, we remain committed to upholding the integrity and respect of our school community.

Sincerely,
Oregon Hope Chinese School Board

Fantastic experience: I have sent both of my kids to Oregon Hope. The teachers here know how to meet the needs of each child. My son is a very active child, but with their guidance he has channeled this energy into positive activities such as learning Chinese language. My son enjoys going here so much that I enroll him every summer for summer camp. He got into a public school Chinese immersion program in the fall, yet I continue to send him to Oregon Hope for the after school program. He loves his teachers and friends here, and now his little sister goes here too. They both love going to this school. This is a great school!

Young sister is so proud of him and always talks about him at school.

Fantastic experience: We are very happy with my son's school experience. From the first visit, he loved the environment, and Ms. Kong was very welcoming, letting him play and explore. Although we speak Chinese at home and his English wasn’t strong at first, he’s now using more English outside of home, which is great progress. The school is conveniently located near a park, and on nice days, the teachers take the children there for outdoor activities. Since my son doesn’t nap, Ms. Kong ensures he stays engaged with extra learning activities during that time. Overall, we’re really pleased with the school and the supportive environment they provide for his growth.

It’s great to hear that the outdoor activities at the park have been a highlight for him! Watching him learn, explore, and thrive has been such a joy. Thank you for your trust—we look forward to many more happy moments ahead!

Negative experience: We had a deeply troubling experience with this school and its owner/teacher. Our son would often cry at the sight of the teacher but initially didn’t explain why. He eventually shared that he had been spanked for not napping. We believe that disciplinary practices like this are outdated, inappropriate, and have no place in any educational setting. We encourage parents, especially those with high-energy children, to carefully evaluate this school before deciding on enrollment. Adding to our distress, the owner sent us text message and email falsely accusing us of writing a review we did not author. We hope that sharing our experience helps other parents make informed decisions about their children’s care and education.

Fantastic experience: My daughter enrolled at the Oregon Hope Chinese School last fall. As a young kid, she was facing a lot challenges when she first started preschool due to lack of social exposure in the pandemic. Ms. Kong is not only loving and patient, she is a true educator who really understands children and takes the right method to motivate them. Ms. Kong creates an atmosphere that children feel safe and happy. My daughter made tremendous progress in her social and emotional development at OHCS. She loves the school and her teachers so much.

Fantastic experience: Our family has been enrolled at Oregon Hope Chinese school since 2017. Min and her small, play-based, mix-aged preschool have been a great fit for both of my kids. This home-based preschool is located next to a public playground and green space that the kids frequently visit and explore with their teachers when the weather is nice. The school itself also has a large fenced outdoor space with covered areas for the kids to play. Each month there is a new theme/subject that the students learn about and discuss during their daily morning circle time. They have weekly arts and craft projects they bring home. The kids get structured learning time, but also a lot of opportunities for free play. Min used to arrange for school performances at Asian Festivals and during the holidays, but that hasn’t happened this past year due to Covid. The older students have daily Mandarin (reading and writing) lessons when the younger kids, who still need naps, do so. The mixed age set up at the school encourages learning and respect amongst the students. My kids love all of their teachers at the school, including their online Saturday Mandarin school teacher, whom they have yet to meet in person because of covid restrictions. The teachers at this school are all experienced and they care for their students. They invest time and energy to each individual child to help them overcome their own set of challenges. This school has helped my kids learn a second language, while building confidence and allowing them to grow academically and socially. We are happy to have found OHCS.

Fantastic experience: My older daughter Anjelica has been with Oregon Hope Chinese School for almost 4 years and her younger sister Zoe for 1.5 years. Anjelica can read the Chinese text books for first graders now, and can write many Chinese words. More amazingly, she knows how to use abacus a little. It is such a nice place to let children be themselves, exploring the world. Anjelica will go to elementary school this fall, and will comeback for after school care. Zoe will likely finish all her preschool development here too.

Fantastic experience: My son is 6 and he has been attending the Saturday Chinese immersion class for one year. Although only once a week, he already made friends at the school. The class setting is casual and bilingual. So even Chinese is not my son's native language, he still is able to follow it along. For the lower level class, the class is using art as the mean of teaching. My son has been singing Chinese songs at home! Great school!

Fantastic experience: Finding the right preschool is not easy, who knew that even at this age deciding where to send your little one would be so hard. There are so many emotions and expectations in play. For us it was important to find the right atmosphere where our son would feel not only comfortable but also loved. I cannot remember how many schools we toured, I’ve lost count. We asked everybody, we heard so many experiences, great recommendations and yet we were not 100% sure about any of them. Finally we google OHCS and took the tour. From the moment we spoke on the phone to making the appointment to the end of the tour we had the feeling that this was the right one. During the tour our son fit right in and felt very comfortable. We were looking for a space where he could socialize, play and have fun. We loved the idea of a mixed age group. The room is spacious, clean and organized very neat. We liked the garden and chickens and my son loves the wood stomp. There is a beautiful little park next door where they go and explore. It’s very safe since they use the back door to access the park. There are 3 teachers who are respectful, loving, kind and clear when it comes down to making sure the kids follow the rules and respect each other. The kids love them. On the other hand, there is another plus. Learning a different language in a multicultural community. We also attend the Saturday school. We are fascinated with the activities they offer such as wushu for our son and Taichi for my husband and me. This is something we do as a family and always looking forward to it. A year has past since we picked this school. We are very happy here and we are definitely going to continue for the next school year.

Fantastic experience: Our son has gone to Oregon Hope and teacher Kong for 2 years and we love it. We continue to go despite the commute from our house because the teachers have genuine relationships with him and you can tell that this is a calling for them. He struggled at first in the school setting and they worked hard with him individually. Now he's doing great and loves school. Particularly, he loves how much outdoor play they get and the weekly themes. We plan on sending our daughter there when she's old enough. This is the place to send your children if you want a family atmosphere and a personalized approach to your child's education.

Fantastic experience: My daughter has been attending Oregon Hope Chinese Saturday School since we moved here a few years ago. She started in Level 1 and is currently in Level 3. The classes are held in our neighborhood public school. The location is very convenient and the facility is great. I'm very happy we found this school when we moved here. It provided a great opportunity for my daughter to learn Chinese reading, writing, and more importantly, to keep connected with her cultural heritage. The curriculum is well designed for America-born Chinese children. Teachers are very passionate and responsible because most of them also enrolled their children in the school. Besides Chinese, the Saturday school also offers Chinese painting, martial arts, and dance. I have been enjoying the adult dance classes very much and we have been invited to perform in Lansu Garden and the convention center in celebration of Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn festivals every year.

Fantastic experience: My daughter has been in this school since she is 3 years old, and she did a full-time Kindergarten program here. She is currently in 1st grade now, and still goes here for after-school program and summer camp. My daughter is a happy trilingual child (We speak Japanese at home). I'm often asked how come I don't speak any Chinese when kids are speaking in fluent Chinese! Instructors combine music, movements and language learning together. Kids sing in Chinese and English as they dance with music. It is really fun and and effective. Children always get a lot of compliments when they perform in the public culture events. The school is located next to a nature park. My children also enjoy summer camp program here each year as there are a lot of outdoor activities to engage children in hand-on experiments. I love the mixed age group. Older children help younger ones and younger children learn from big brothers and sisters. It is a nice and supportive environment for everyone. Great school!

Fantastic experience: My son is currently attending this great small private Chinese immersion school and we couldn't be happier. The school is a house that offers a small setting that is exactly what we were looking for. The teachers are very attentive and the owner is extremely flexible with the hours and scheduling. Each morning the kids are dropped according to the paren't schedule and there are no strict time attendance or penalties. The kids have free play time before circle time and often there are arts & craft activities that vary in theme. Weather permitting, the school has a huge back yard with plenty of play structures for the kids to enjoy. My son has been going there for 6 months now and we can really notice his growth and understanding of Mandarin. If you are looking for small private, home school setting with a chance your kids to learn Mandarin then I highly recommend you give this school a chance. The parents or child are not required to be of Chinese origin as quite a few of the families are not, including us.

Fantastic experience: This is a Chinese immersion preschool for ages 3 through kindergarten. There are wonderful teachers. The main teacher is so patient, kind and very consistent. She teaches the children Chinese poems, songs and does tons of crafts (both Chinese and American holiday themed). The children also does performances at the Chinese Garden and Convention Center for Chinese holidays. The setting is small and intimate, which is very good for those kiddos who need a little bit more attention. She is also very accommodating when it comes to the schedule, as long as her teacher:student ratio works. It has been a great experience for my kiddo who has been going since he was 3 yrs old.

Fantastic experience: My husband and I have been sending our 2 children to Oregon Hope Chinese School for preschool so we have known the main teacher, Min Kong, for a very long time. She has become like an extended family to us. Our eldest daughter attended her first preschool here when she was 3. She was not the most easy going kid and I still remember she was a bit cautious going to school for the first time. Ms. Kong was very patient and understanding and helped her (and us, the parents) ease into the transition. Now is our youngest son's turn to enter preschool. He too was a bit cautious for the first few months but both of them gradually love spending time at school. They made good friends, learned a ton of Chinese (which is our main reason for choosing the school), learned discipline, respect, but also having fun. When I pick both kids up from school, they all have smiles on their faces. I still remember with my daughter, she actually begged me to stay longer so she can play more with her friends. The school has a good-sized playground filled with many play structures. I love their small student:teacher ratio so everyone gets enough attention in class. Ms. Kong creates a monthly theme for the kids, for example this month they are learning about the Solar System, the previous months they were learning Modes of Transportation, Weather, Life at Farm. They also learn and celebrate Chinese and American Holidays: Chinese New Year, Mooncake Festival, Thanksgiving, Christmas. They would bring home really nice art projects and I would collect them as keepsakes. All teachers speak to them fully in Chinese Mandarin so they can pick up the language faster. All in all, my husband and I are very happy to have found a good and safe Chinese Immersion preschool for our kids. We highly recommend this place to any parent :)

Fantastic experience: This school was seriously a huge blessing! We were scrambling to find a daycare/preschool that would fit what we were looking for due to my wife going back to work and somehow we found this place! seriously a gift! Our little one was in a previous day care where the workers were on their phones and it was literally a daycare, dirty and grimy and just no learning/development happening. Here at Oregon Hope Chinese school, my little one is actually in school! she is learning songs, learning about specific topics, spelling, letters and even now writing characters in manderin! She is learning new things everyday and on top of that its a pure immersion mandarin program. The teachers are amazing, very warm and caring and truly vested into these children's lives, so much that they come to birthday parties and special events! We highly recommend this school if you are looking for a place to know that your child is learning and developing and in a secure place where you know the teachers actually care about what your child is learning and preparing them for Kindergarten and beyond. Our little one is in her 2nd year here and definitely will miss this place! The plus side is that they have summer school here so we'll definitely putting her here during the summer! My daughter loves this place, i ask her everyday, what were your highs and lows and she always every day says "All Highs"! She is happy, she is growing Thank God we found this place! A+++++ highly recommend! Worth every penny!
