French Academy DC

Fantastic experience: I just finished up French Survival 2 and 3 and am looking forward to starting Level 4. After retiring, I'm taking French classes to accomplish my lifelong goal of being able to speak French fluently. The online classes provided by the French Academy have been excellent, with the instructors truly caring that we are learning the language. My most recent teacher, Sabrina, was encouraging, supportive, and also really wanted to make sure we understood concepts before moving to the next lesson. It was a small class which gave each of us plenty of time to practice speaking. I highly recommend the courses offered and am looking forward to my continued learning!

Fantastic experience: I’ve been very happy with my lessons with French Academy so far. I’ve had both in-person lessons in Alexandria and private lessons online, and the quality is excellent. The classes are small, and while they do go quickly, the teachers spend a lot of time making sure you understand the material. I feel they do a great job with beginners, especially with various skill levels and previous understanding of French. I can highly recommend teachers Magali and Karyne, and I can’t speak highly enough about my tutor Maja. I’ve now switched from an in-person class to an online class due to my schedule and will update my review after I’ve finished, but I’m sure it will also be excellent. I’d also like to put a plug in for the owners and staff of the school. I found them to be highly flexible and accommodating, working with unique circumstances and schedules. It’s been very appreciated.

Fantastic experience: Bonjour! I had a great experience with French Academy! My husband and I took the Survival 1 class to prepare for our trip to France. Our teacher, Magali, was fantastic! patient, clear, responsive, supportive, funny - the time flew by in each class, and I Iearned so much. I highly recommend the French Academy! C'est génial!

Fantastic experience: I love my evening classes with Magali! The classes are well organized, and allow for lots of conversation. It's also a great opportunity to meet others who are interested in learning French. Very enjoyable experience!

Fantastic experience: I have taken two classes (Survival 5 and Conversation and Grammar A2) at the Alexandria location and really enjoyed both of them. Magali is very friendly and does a great job of explaining French grammar and making class fun. I had taken French courses in high school and college, but was quite out of practice and a little nervous to speak it in front of others. I shouldn't have worried, as Magali creates a very welcoming and encouraging environment. I am learning a lot and can tell that I'm making progress with both my written and spoken French.

My tutor, Magali, is incredibly patient and adept at customizing our conversations and exercises to challenge me appropriately, ensuring that I learn and grow without feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. Fantastic experience: Madame Natacha is an excellent children’s teacher! My 2 year old has been speaking some bits and pieces of French unprompted after just 3 weeks. We will definitely be continuing our language education with her!

Fantastic experience: I have been very happy with the French Academy, especially the Alexandria location because the instructor (Ms. Burns) has been extremely patient and professorial at the same time. The Survival series of classes has been fun as a result of her positive feedback and sense of humor, so I recommend it.

Fantastic experience: I've found the French Academy to be a just-right fit for me. The pace is good and Magali, the instructor for the four sessions levels I've attended, is a terrific instructor. She brings enthusiasm and fun to each class. She's great at finding a way to answer our questions in most cases without having to 'resort to English'- whether by a roundabout expansion of the conversation, miming an action, or using the white board. I think she is also good at reading the room and adjusting the flow if/as necessary in a given class. I appreciate that the classes are small as that lends itself to a comfortable and cohesive class. I've really enjoyed the classes and plan to continue with French Academy.

Fantastic experience: Three of my children attend French Academy DC. They have attended two of the full immersion summer camps and now they attend lessons once a week. With this, their French has blossomed incredibly and they even use some of their language at home! We have definitely had weeks where I wasn't great at reinforcing vocabulary/lessons at home and even still, I have seen significant progress in their confidence and capabilities. My husband wasn't originally convinced that it was valuable to learn the French language and was hesitant to begin regular classes, but he now is proud to tell people that he has to ask for translations of what the kids are saying frequently at home. I unequivocally recommend this school to anyone who is interested in learning the French language. The administration is extremely responsive and all of their teachers are fantastic and great with kids!

Fantastic experience: I've been enjoying taking private lessons with Magali for a couple of years now and could not be happier. She is patient, diplomatic :), and a terrific instructor. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: I have taken the Survival series and find it to be an affordable and pleasurable learning experience. I appreciate the immersion approach. The series moves quickly through grammatical concepts, providing a fast-paced overview of basic French. The classes emphasize speaking, which I enjoy because I find that the hardest to practice on my own. I've had Magali as an instructor for the entire series, and she is wonderful. She has an excellent comprehension of the fine points of French grammar and is very warm and personable, which helps take the stress out of trying to speak in another language!

Fantastic experience: I started classes with French Academy in 2022 and it has been an incredible experience. The immersion method is really useful—don’t be intimidated by it. I’ve done group and private lessons and it is very budget friendly for the quality of the instructors and materials. Don’t put off learning French anymore—sign up for a class today!

Fantastic experience: I took online Survival 1, and as someone who generally doesn't love online courses, I was very impressed with how well the material had been adapted to suit the environment. My instructor was excellent at teaching French to complete beginners and at engaging with students with a variety of different learning styles. I had to miss a couple of classes due to work obligations and my instructor and the director worked with me so that I was still able to learn the material and not fall behind my classmates. It's challenging but I learned more in one session than in years of high school language courses.

Fantastic experience: I loved my instructor tailored feedback to each student during every lesson, which personally made me feel encouraged and not overwhelmed. Whenever I emailed my instructor to ask about French language tips, his responses were timely and comprehensive. I also had an instance where another student wanted the class recorded and I didn't feel comfortable with it and I communicated it privately after class. When I expressed this the instructor was really supportive. If you want really immersive lessons that will bring you closer to sounding like a native speaker, I highly recommend the French Academy.

Fantastic experience: I took a survival 3 and I really enjoyed it. My teacher was patient. The format clear and convenient. We also got a lot of extra materials for home. It was a great experience.

Negative experience: Poor audio and visual tools as well as overall communication from the administrators. My interest and passion to learn French was quickly dispelled. Asked for a refund after the first class and wasn’t offered one or a portion of one, hopefully everyone else has better luck. Learning a language is supposed to be fun right? Maybe..maybe not.

Fantastic experience: I had an excellent experience with French Academy DC and my instructor Magali. The class sizes are small and the material is well designed and I improved a lot in a short period of time.

Fantastic experience: I am really enjoying the classes! I wasn't sure how I would like an online class but they have really worked around the COVID issue to provide a positive and inclusive learning environment. The homework assignments are somewhat challenging and practice is required each week but it is really fun. The instructor is very helpful and explains the rules and helps you practice the pronunciation as individuals within the group. I already registered for the next level!

Fantastic experience: I have taken private French lessons from the French Academy DC for 4+ years. The lessons are excellent and my fluency has advanced considerably. The sessions are well-organized and broadly focused on grammar, vocabulary, oral comprehensions, and speaking. All sessions are relaxed, friendly, and fun.
