My brother and I wanted to learn the language of our ancestors, and found the school online. After three years of Duolingo, I knew I needed proper language instruction if I was going to become at least intermediate in Italian. I was drawn to Applauso with the hybrid availability since I live an hour away in traffic, so it wasn’t realistic to go in person with small children. Professore Applauso is incredibly knowledgeable (É italiano!), entertaining, and understanding! He is an excellent educator and committed to his students’ success. The price of the course is reasonable for a 10-week course that includes grammar, vocabulary, PLENTY of speaking practice, and culture lessons. If you can attend in person, it is definitely a richer experience, but I am happy with my online attendance as well. I can’t wait to take 102 and beyond.

Negative experience: Positive: You get to talk with others and share experiences, (which is enriching). Negative: However, the school feels old-fashioned with an outdated environment. The teaching method is notably archaic, failing to leverage modern advancements. Many apps nowadays offer more personalized and efficient learning experiences through one-on-one interactions, natural learning methods, making traditional methods seem less effective by comparison. The classroom is super small, is just a little room and it is not updated. Personal opinion: If you are around your 20s-40s (years old) you are not going to feel comfortable at all.

He is a native Italian speaker so he is knowledgable of his material, enthusiastic in his approach, and comprehensive in his explanations. To top it off, he is quite skilled with technology, so students who choose to participate via zoom are made to feel as though they are right there in his classroom. Fantastic experience: I feel very fortunate to have found Professor Applauso and his Italian classes. The classes are a fun and interesting way to learn Italian. He teaches at a moderate rate which is less intimidating for new learners, and if you miss a class or two it is not difficult to catch up. Speaking and listening in conversation is one of the most difficult aspects of learning a foreign language, as you need to think and process quickly. There is ample opportunity to practice this in the exercises and workshops held during each class. Additionally, Professor Applauso’s humor is a fine addition! Also, he fits in cultural lessons and activities which make the classes fun for everyone. Note that I had tried learning Italian on my own with one of the popular online courses, but I am progressing much more quickly now that I am in the classroom. Classes are in-person, and with Zoom for anyone who cannot make it in-person. And they are recorded for later viewing if you miss a class. I highly recommend Professor Applauso to anyone who wants to learn Italian.

Fantastic experience: Volcanos! Cannoli! Math Card Games! SO MUCH FUN! In his unassuming and joyful way, Dr. Applauso (and his son, and his co-teacher, and all of his guest educators that he invites to demonstrate the language) extend the Italian culture so EVERYONE feels welcome in his class! He really made sure both the online and in class students could participate and learn. He sailed through the challenges of a multiple age and level classroom. He covered Pompeii and asked the kids where to build a house to avoid the lava! Then, we made a tiny volcano to test the lava flow! We made cannoli and gnocchi! We learned numbers by playing traditional Italian card games! We bargained for vintage fashion with real euros! I cannot say enough about how friendly and nice everyone was and how much we learned! It’s crazy, but my kids and I looked forward to this class all week! I taught languages for a long while, and I am very critical, I always can find a small correction, but Professor Applauso does it all! He is not only a native Italian language speaker and a tenured professor, but EXTREMELY PATIENT and EFFECTIVE with children!

Professore Applauso has fun and interactive games to help you practice and it makes his classes interesting. He also knows a lot about linguistics and root words which help you make connections to your home language. Furthermore, he is a native speaker and offers some interesting details and facts about daily life in Italy. I wish that I had started earlier but I was worried about committing my time. He records each class and offers a remote option so his classes are available if you have a busy schedule. I highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I attended Applauso Learning Center for two years from 2020 to 2022, and completed Italian 101 through 202. With the help of Prof. Applauso, I passed the CILS B1 Cittadinanza exam in October 2022! My wife is an Italian citizen and, as of 2018, I'm required to pass the B1 exam to apply for citizenship through her. As a native Italian and a Ph.D, Prof. Applauso has a deep love and understanding of Italian language and culture, and he brings that passion and exuberance to each lesson. He cares very much about his students and welcomes their questions and feedback. We took online/hybrid classes, and in-person options are available. Classes usually include some time for smaller group conversation, or breakout rooms in Zoom. One day, you're writing about film, or your Italian dream home to practice grammar. Another day, you'll make bread from scratch. There's plenty of homework, but you'll also forget how much you're actually learning. I had a great experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in learning Italian.

Fantastic experience: My husband and I took Italian 101 at Applauso Italian Learning Center and it was a really great experience! We jumped right in, learning to introduce ourselves right away and then having plenty of opportunities to practice what we'd learned while playing games, interacting with other students and even making bread! The class was also very flexible for us - we were able to participate on Zoom when it was not convenient to go "in person" and I didn't feel as though we missed too much by doing this. Professore Applauso has tremendous patience, a good sense of humor and lots (and lots!) of energy. He's a very good instructor and we are looking forward to continuing our learning with him.

Fantastic experience: I recommend the Applauso Italian Learning Center. Professor Applauso's classes are engaging and fun. Each lesson is carefully planned and includes a "workshop" that will prepare you for the real world. The classes are in person or virtual (hybrid) and exercises are often done with other students using breakout rooms if virtual. The homework isn't just from the textbook but can include watching a movie or reading an article or writing about your own childhood. The workshops are fun -we learned to make pasta and bread, practiced ordering in a restaurant or bar. and learned Italian games. I learned a lot from this method of instruction.

Fantastic experience: Are you curious about the Italian language and culture? The Applauso Italian Learning Center is the best place for learning Italian in Maryland. I have been a student with Prof. Nicolino Applauso for two years, and studying Italian with him via Zoom helped me so much in getting through the boredom and isolation of the pandemic. (Of course it's all better in person). Prof. Applauso is fantastically engaging, and makes learning fun as well as sufficiently rigorous. He brings life to his classroom with occasional pasta-making, singing, and piano playing. Prof. Applauso is a GEM of an instructor and an outstanding individual of high integrity. Fantastic experience: Exploring Contemporary Italian Cinema at Applauso Italian Learning Center was a delight. We viewed films not available in the United States, learning new vocabulary and idioms in a low-pressure, fun atmosphere. Participants of varying levels were all encouraged to write and speak about the films in each class with well-prepared study guides and short lectures. Professor Applauso is good-humored and makes the experience of language learning entirely pleasant.

Fantastic experience: Can’t say enough great things about this course. I was curious about how well the class would work out being taught online, but I should not have worried. The class is very interactive and our amazing instructor, Dr. Annalinda Iacoviello, uses break-out rooms, video clips, online white boards, and more. The time in class speeds past because it’s so engaging and interesting. Dr. Iacoviello is patient, friendly, and great at explaining. Dr. Applauso also pops into the class now and then, and we all look forward to the sessions with him including baking bread and learning Italian music. I really appreciate the cultural aspects of the course. Highly recommend -- give it a try!

Fantastic experience: I have been trying to study Italian Language on my own for quite some time. This year I took level one from the Applauso Italian Learning Center. Professoressa Annalinda Lacoviello made the learning experience fun and efficient while incorporating the lessons. And we had Professor Nicolino Applauso pop-in occasionally to teach us Italian through songs, games and breadmaking. I am moving on to the next level with Applauso Italian Learning Center because I am finally learning the language because of this class. STRONGLY RECOMMEND.

Fantastic experience: Professor Applauso (Applauso Italian Learning Center) is wonderful. Even doing online, I love the class and going to be taking my second class in January. Fantastic experience: I have been working with Nicolino Applauso for the past few years. My first encounters with him were with my high school students. I found him to be an amazing teacher, and we quickly became personal friends. I have been studying Italian since 2000. I went to school in Florence to learn verbs in 2004. While I have become somewhat proficient through immersion, Nicolino has helped me to gain a command of some of the intricacies of Italian grammar. My awareness has increased my ability to communicate with my Italian neighbors. I became an Italian citizen in 2018. I became a resident of Italy in 2019. My wife is now learning Italian from Nicolino. Dr. Applauso’s energetic approach to teaching and learning make his sessions fun. While doing this, he provides rigor in grammar and pronunciation. All this said, I recommend his learning center to anyone who is serious about learning the Italian language.

Fantastic experience: I began studying at Applauso Italian Learning Center as a 'seasoned' student of several Italian language schools, and found Applauso to be the finest! The classes offer a combination of learning and fun through lessons rich in Italian arts and culture, history, cuisine, and much more. Fantastic experience: I have taken many Italian Language classes, both in the United States and in Italy. Some were very good. But none were at the level of the Applauso Italian Learning Center. Professor Applauso is committed to making learning enjoyable, while incorporating all that makes a language special, not only the words. The professor accomplishes this in class by instruction, singing a song, providing a little known historical fact, making cannoli, viewing an Italian movie, relating a personal story, and most of all - his view that anything in life can be incorporated into an Italian language class.

Fantastic experience: Professor Applauso is a dynamic teacher, who uses a multi-faceted approach, which maintains a high interest level. He is personable, very supportive, and creative. His enthusiasm is contagious. It is a pleasure to be one of his students.

Fantastic experience: FANTASTIC! I'm a heritage Italian speaker (moved to the states when I was 11). I recently started taking this course, starting with 102, in order to help me with my Italian. I have two children now and I am determined to speak exclusively Italian with them. This course has helped my grammar and vocabulary tremendously. I learned WHY I grew up saying things a certain way and how rules work, so I can now figure out things for myself instead when in a jam. Furthermore, I hadn't spoken Italian with any kind of consistency for 25 years and in the 6 months I have taken this course my vocabulary and fluency has exploded! I still have a long way to go but I know Nicolino Applauso will get me there. As soon as my children are old enough (both are under 2) I plan on enrolling them in his kids course, as well, so they don't grow up just hearing Papa' and Nonna speak Italian with them. If you are thinking about taking an Italian course, you won't find a better bang for your buck!
